Amazon chooses Darden for Kindle project

Amazon Kindle DXSo, it’s all over the news.  Amazon has chosen the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia to be the only business school in the country to use its newest, upgraded Kindle DX reader to replace the books and cases that make up its curriculum. (link)  I am [obviously] very excited to possibly be among the first students to use this new technology as part of my schooling.  Even more exciting is that Amazon and Darden will be paying for the readers!

Some of you know that I was involved with the design of an electronic reader back a few years ago before the original Kindle was introduced.  Rather than a large “sheet” our reader was two smaller screens that could be used together seamlessly (like a book form factor with a “hinging” motion between them), rotated so that one was on top of the other (newspaper form factor), or separated so that you could take one half on the go (for portability).  Unfortunately it never made it to market, but in the end, the newest Kindle is supposedly really great.  Once I get to school in the fall and give it a whirl, I’ll be sure to let you know what I think.
